Incisors are the most noticeable teeth in the mouth because of their position. Their chisel-like shapes and sharp edges make them perfect for biting and slicing food. They are located at the front-most part of your mouth and are what you sink into foods such as fruits. Here are some fun facts you should know:
Types of Incisors
Humans have two types. These are:
- Central incisors: whenever you smile, the type of tooth that’s front-and-center of your mouth is the central. They are located at the very front of your mouth’s upper and lower jaws. These are also the first two front teeth to appear in babies, also known as baby teeth.
- Lateral incisors: these are located on the left and right sides of your central ones. Lateral incisors are located away from the center of your jaw.
Functions
The primary function is to cut into food as it enters your mouth. While their aesthetic appearance is highly scrutinized because they are always visible when smiling, talking, and eating, they perform many more functions other than just tear into food. Some top functions include:
- Supporting the shape and appearance of your lips
- Guiding your jaw into the correct position when your mouth closes
- Helping pronounce certain sounds such as “t” and “th”
While the central incisors of the upper and lower jaws have similar shapes, they are usually different sizes, with the upper central incisors being wider and more prominent than the narrower and smaller ones of the lower jaw.
