Five Worst Foods for Your Teeth

According to the American Dental Association, taking food and drinks that contain sugar causes cavities. Plaque is a sticky-filmed -bacteria that frequently forms on your teeth. After eating a sugary meal or snack, the acid released from the bacteria attacks the tooth enamel causing cavities to develop. Fortunately, you can avoid all the pain and aches by limiting or avoiding the following foods.

Carbonated Drinks

Drinking carbonated soda in large quantities damages your teeth. The damage is similar to that of using crack cocaine and methamphetamine. When you drink carbonated drinks, plaque produces more acid that attacks your tooth enamel. Your mouth also dries out leading to less saliva.

Ice

Many people assume that since ice is water and it’s okay to chew it. Sadly, you are susceptible to emergencies such as broken, chipped, and cracked teeth if you like to eat and chew your ice. You can chill your beverages with ice instead of chewing on it. If you can’t resist the urge, take water or drinks that are chilled without ice.

Citrus Fruits

The acid found in fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits makes your teeth vulnerable to tooth decay by eroding the enamel. The acid is also troublesome to mouth sores. However, you can take them in moderation when having your meals to get the benefits of vitamins and antioxidants. Don’t forget to rinse your mouth afterward.

Potato Chips

Although they are crunchy and satisfy many people, chips are unhealthy. Potato chips are loaded with starch, which is converted to sugar and gets trapped in your tooth. The acid produced from the chips can cause tooth decay and cavity. After eating a bag of chips, ensure that you floss to get rid of the stuck bits.

Bread

Aim for whole wheat when you yearn for some carbs. They are not easily broken down and have less sugar. When you eat bread, the starch converts into sugar after mixing with saliva. This transforms into a paste that is gummy and ends up sticking between your teeth, which can lead to a cavity.
