While overbites are a common and often mild issue seen by dentists, it is important to determine if treatment is needed to protect a patient’s teeth, gums, and to avoid long-term complications. Overbites have various causes and, in some cases, can be prevented.  Read on to understand what causes overbites and the treatments available to correct them.

What is an Overbite?

An overbite is a malocclusion that occurs when the upper front teeth extend over the lower teeth. Though many people have a slight overbite,  a more severe case may cause issues such as tooth decay, pain in the jaw, or gum disease. For some, it may even affect speech.

What Causes Overbites?

Understanding what causes overbites can help patients and parents of young children prevent it from happening. There are some common causes that contribute to the condition.

  • Thumb Sucking & Pacifiers. Though young children often suck their thumbs, persistent thumb-sucking and pacifier use can contribute to overbites.
  • Genetics.  Sometimes patients can inherit an overbite from their genetic background.
  • Clenching Teeth. Clenching of the teeth can cause jaw muscles to become strong enough to cause an overbite.
  • Tooth Loss & Grinding.  Grinding of the teeth as well as adult tooth loss can change the alignment of the teeth, resulting in an overbite.

How are Overbites Corrected?

While treatments for overbites in children and adults may vary, according to the Cleveland Clinic, there are various solutions available to correct them.

  • Braces to realign teeth followed by retainers to maintain alignment
  • Removing adult or baby teeth to create more room
  • Correcting jaw alignment with surgery

How Can I Prevent an Overbite?

Although genetic factors are unavoidable, parents can discourage thumb-sucking in children and limit the use of pacifiers and cups with spill-proof valves. For those who find themselves clenching and grinding their teeth while they sleep, a mouth guard can help.
