In Dental Hygiene

Brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups are all important ways that we care for our teeth. For those of us who play sports or experience teeth grinding, though, we may need extra protection. A custom-fitted mouth guard may be necessary to keep our teeth safe from damage.

WHAT ARE MOUTH GUARDS?

Mouth guards are coverings worn over the teeth. They protect the teeth, tongue, gums, and cheeks from injury caused by sports or bruxism (teeth grinding.) They come ready to wear, or they can be custom-made using a mold of your teeth. Custom mouth guards provide the most comfort and protection. They use material molded specifically for your mouth and are designed for your needs.

WHO SHOULD USE ONE?

Any adult or child who engages in contact sports like football or hockey, or sports that pose a risk of injury from falling, like gymnastics or skateboarding, should wear a mouth guard. Those who experience nighttime teeth grinding should also wear one while they sleep. Mouth guards protect against chipped or lost teeth, nerve damage, and soft tissue damage to the lips, tongue, and cheeks. These injuries can be painful and costly, so wearing a mouth guard is a great way to stay safe and protected.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MOUTH GUARD

It is important to care for you or your child’s mouth guard to keep it clean and damage-free.

  • After each use, rinse with cold water. Use a toothbrush and soapy water to clean it. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.
  • Keep the it in a firm, vented plastic case when not in use to protect it from damage.
  • Don’t expose it to high temperatures like direct sunlight, hot water, or hot surfaces. This can cause it to warp and distort its shape.
  • Check the mouth guard for general wear, and bring it to all regular dentist appointments to have it examined.
