In TMJ & Migraine Therapy

According to the American Migraine Foundation, over 36 million people in the U.S. experience migraines annually, caused by bright light, barometric pressure fluctuations, high humidity, obesity, allergies, lack of sleep, stress, certain odors, and hormonal changes. Research also shows a link between dentistry and migraines, indicating oral health can cause pain to the head.

WHAT IS A MIGRAINE?

A migraine is a headache of alternating intensity, ranging from severe to recurring pains and other associated symptoms. However, a migraine episode is different from a headache as it occurs in different phases and usually lasts for several days. People with chronic migraines usually experience episodes lasting from 3-4 hours to three days for up to two weeks monthly. Regarding dentistry and migraines, specific dental issues have a direct impact on head pains.

DENTISTRY AND MIGRAINES ISSUES

TOOTH DECAY

Gum problems and tooth decay are possible causes of pain in the head. This often occurs when the patient has an oral infection, resulting in direct pain to one or more parts of the head. The pain experienced can also be redirected to other body parts, making the patient unaware of the infection.

BAD BITE

Bad bite is a term used to refer to missing, crooked, shaky, or sore teeth that can cause pain when you bite into certain foods. This is typically associated with intense pressure on jaw muscles, especially for people with misaligned teeth. A bad bite can result in difficulty swallowing and migraines, or chronic pain in the head.

TEETH GRINDING

Teeth grinding is a dental issue usually caused by stress, anxiety, some drug prescriptions, and sleep disorders. Continued teeth grinding or clenching can cause gum or jaw muscle inflammation and trigger migraines and headaches. Besides, teeth grinding may cause other problems such as damage to crowns and fillings, tooth chips, and tooth sensitivity.
