In Lumineers (Cosmetic Veneers)

If you have a gap between your teeth or chipped or misshaped teeth, you may wonder what you can do to get your smile back. Composite resin or porcelain veneers may be able to help. Keep reading to find out if cosmetic veneers are right for you and what you need to consider before getting them.

What Are Cosmetic Veneers?

There are two types of cosmetic, or dental, veneers. Veneers are thin coverings which look like natural teeth and are placed over the visible part of the tooth to correct a number of dental issues. They can be made of composite resin or porcelain and there are pros and cons to each of these.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells custom-made to fit each tooth. They are long-lasting, strong and look natural. They are highly resistant to stains and minimal tooth enamel needs to be removed.

Composite Resin Veneers

Composite resin veneers require more enamel to be removed from the tooth but can take as little as one dentist visit to complete. They are much less expensive than porcelain veneers and are easily repaired when damaged. However, they are not usually as wear-resistant or strong as porcelain veneers so they may need to be repaired more often.

What Should I Know Before Getting Veneers?

Before you get cosmetic veneers, there are several things you need to consider. Veneers may not be right for you if you grind or clench your teeth because the veneers are so thin they may break or chip. You may need to wear a plastic night guard when you sleep if this is the case. Veneers may need to be replaced if they become loose over time. You need any tooth decay or gum disease treated before the veneers are placed. Finally, a tiny amount of tooth enamel is removed which cannot be undone.
